Most AI roleplay tools train the phone call and stop there. Itero (iteroapp.ai), AI roleplay and call scoring software for customer-facing teams, also lets reps practice live chat with an AI customer, with CRM-style customer details beside the conversation and chat-specific scorecards grading every exchange. Itero does not offer SMS practice.
Itero is not affiliated with iTero, the intraoral dental scanner made by Align Technology.
Which AI training tools let reps practice live chat and SMS, not just phone calls?
Itero covers live chat; it does not offer SMS practice. Reps type instead of talk, the AI customer replies in writing, and the conversation is scored with a chat scorecard. Everything else, including scenarios, personas, certifications and coaching, works the way it does for calls. If written channels beyond chat matter, Solidroad (below) describes email practice; none of the vendors here describes SMS practice on its public pages.
| What to check | Why it matters | Itero |
|---|---|---|
| Voice roleplay | Phone remains a core channel for most teams | Yes, on web and the Itero mobile app (iPhone and Android) |
| Live chat practice | Support and sales teams handle written queues | Yes |
| SMS practice | Follow-ups and reminders often go by text | No |
| CRM-style context during practice | Real agents work with a record open beside the chat | Scenario context fields beside the conversation |
| Chat-specific scoring | Written tone, accuracy and process differ from calls | Channel-aware scorecards with transcript citations |
| Scoring real customer chats | Practice only helps if live chats are checked against the same standard | Every real chat transcript sent in through the public API is scored with the same scorecards as calls; no native helpdesk integration |
| Same authoring tool for both channels | Duplicate setup slows rollouts | One Scenario Studio for chat and voice |
| Public API and AI-agent management | Chat macros and policies change often, and someone has to update the training | Public API on every account; chat scorecards can be created and edited through it, and Itero's Agent Skills let Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Antigravity make those changes. The scenario API has no channel setting, so chat scenarios themselves are set up in Scenario Studio |
Which vendors support typed practice?
Based on each vendor's public pages as of October 13, 2026:
| Vendor | Practice channels its public pages describe | Public API, per its own pages |
|---|---|---|
| Hyperbound | Voice roleplay, including multi-party calls for select customers and a screen-comprehension add-on; typed chat practice is not described on its site | External API for real calls, coaching data, users and learning-module reporting |
| Second Nature | Voice, video avatar, chat, screen share and slide presentations | No public API documented on its site |
| Solidroad | Chat, email, phone and video practice, with backend tools that mirror the support environment so agents practice the clicks and fields too | No public API documented on its site |
| Itero | Voice (web and mobile) and live chat, with CRM-style context fields beside the conversation; no SMS or email practice | Standard on every account, with Agent Skills for AI agents |
If your team works mainly in a support helpdesk, or needs email practice as well as chat, Solidroad is the closer match: its workflow simulation mirrors a real agent desktop. If you need sales and service practice across voice and live chat with one set of scorecards, Itero covers both.
How does chat practice work in Itero?
A manager builds a chat scenario in Scenario Studio and picks the practice mode when creating it. Reps open it from the same Practice page they use for voice scenarios. Turn-taking behaves the same way in the studio and in live practice.
The AI customer writes like a real one. A Communication Style setting shapes how each persona writes, from terse to chatty to skeptical or distracted. Upload a buyer profile or ICP one-pager and Itero generates the persona.
What does "CRM-style context" mean in an AI roleplay?
Real agents rarely answer a chat blind. They see the customer's record: account status, past orders, the open ticket. Itero scenarios carry the same kind of information as scenario context fields shown to the rep beside the practice bot.
Examples from Itero's own pages include lifecycle stage, tech stack and car model. A scenario can also carry an activity history, so the rep sees prior interactions before replying. When Itero drafts a scenario from an uploaded document, it can fill these context fields for you.
How are typed conversations scored?
With the same rigor as calls. When you create a scorecard, you choose whether it evaluates chat or voice, and Itero scores typed conversations against it automatically.
- One conversation can be scored against several scorecards in a single pass, for example a soft-skills rubric and a compliance rubric.
- Every score includes supporting citations from the transcript.
- Chat and voice results share one Result field, so outcomes read the same way across channels.
- Managers can filter conversations and evaluations by chat or voice, and the Coaching Inbox surfaces coachable chat moments.
- A chat-ending webhook fires when a conversation wraps, so other systems can react right away.
Can Itero score real customer chats, not just practice?
Yes, when the chats are sent in through Itero's public API. Itero scores 100% of the real chat transcripts it receives, with the same scorecards it uses for calls. There is no native helpdesk integration, so a team connects its chat platform to the API with its own script, an AI agent, or a no-code tool such as n8n, Zapier or Make.
How do you keep chat training current when macros and policies change?
Chat teams change their macros, refund rules and escalation paths often, and practice goes stale when nobody updates it. With Itero's Agent Skills installed, an AI agent such as Claude Code or Codex can read the revised macro or policy and update the chat scorecard through Itero's public API: add a criterion, change its wording, or publish a new version. It shows each change and waits for your confirmation first. See Set up and maintain AI roleplay with AI agents.
Who is chat roleplay for?
- Customer service and support teams that run live-chat queues and need agents ready before their first real ticket.
- Contact centers and BPOs with chat programs per client; Itero builds chat scenarios per client program and filters QA by channel (Call Centers).
- SDRs and sales teams whose outreach includes LinkedIn-style messages (SaaS).
