AI Coaching vs Conversation Intelligence vs AI Roleplay

The three categories overlap in vendor marketing, but they do different jobs at different moments. Here is what each one does and how to tell which you need.

What's the difference between AI sales coaching, conversation intelligence and AI roleplay software?

AI roleplay is practice before the conversation, conversation intelligence records and analyzes conversations after they happen, and AI coaching turns those results into feedback for each rep. Itero combines roleplay, live-call scoring and coaching on one set of scorecards, with a mobile app for practice and in-person conversations.

How do the three categories compare?

The simplest way to separate them is by when they act and what they produce.

What is AI roleplay software?

AI roleplay software lets reps practice a conversation with an AI customer that plays a defined persona and responds to what the rep says. Reps can repeat a scenario as often as they need without a manager or a customer on the other end, and each attempt can be scored. It is the only one of the three that works before a customer is at stake. See AI Role Play.

What is conversation intelligence?

Conversation intelligence software records and transcribes customer conversations, then analyzes them for topics, trends and deal signals. It shows leaders what is happening across calls, and many products also cover forecasting and deal insight. It tells you what happened, and it needs a separate step to change what happens next.

What does AI coaching add?

AI coaching turns a score or an analysis into guidance for one person: what went well, what to work on and where in the conversation it happened. It covers routine feedback on every conversation, so managers can spend their time on the moments that need judgment. It is only as good as the standard behind it, which is why it should use your playbooks and scorecards. See how coaching works in Itero.

Which one do you need?

Start from the problem you have, because each category answers a different one.

  • New reps take too long to get ready: start with roleplay.
  • You can't see what happens on most calls: start with scoring or conversation intelligence.
  • Reps get feedback too rarely: start with coaching.
  • All three are true: look for one platform that connects them, so a gap found on a call leads to practice on that skill.

That connection is what Itero is built for. Reps practice with AI customers, Itero scores live calls on the same scorecards, and managers assign practice for the gaps. Field reps do the same in the Itero mobile app, where they can record in-person conversations with consent (Virtual Ride-Alongs).

If you already use a conversation intelligence product, you can keep it. Itero can pull calls from connected tools and score them on your scorecards (integrations).

Frequently Asked Questions

The categories

Is AI coaching the same as conversation intelligence?

No. Conversation intelligence reports on what happened across calls. AI coaching turns that into specific feedback for one rep. Some products do both.

Is AI roleplay the same as AI coaching?

No. Roleplay is the practice itself, and coaching is the feedback. Practice without feedback repeats mistakes, and feedback without practice leaves reps nowhere to apply it.

Choosing

Does Itero replace a conversation intelligence tool?

For scoring calls against a rubric and coaching the gaps, it can. Itero focuses on scoring and practice, so teams that want forecasting and deal insight can keep their current tool and have Itero score the same calls.

Does this apply to customer service teams?

Yes. The same three categories apply to support and contact-center teams, and Itero serves them on calls and live chat.
